The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), the Ministry of Health and the National Treasury cannot account for over Ksh2.2 billion that was supposed to be set aside to cater for the treatment of the elderly.
The over half a million beneficiaries, have complained of frustrations in their effort to access the free medical services since the launch of the ‘Inua Jamii’ cash transfer programme for the elderly in January 2018.
The Ministry of Health told parliament it didn’t receive the amount they had budgeted for, that instead of receiving Ksh2.2 billion, they received Ksh636 million only.
The government promised the senior citizens free medical insurance alongside a monthly stipend starting January 2018.
Citizens above the age of 70 are entitled to a Sh2,000 monthly allowance, which is paid every two months in a Sh4,000 lumpsum under a cash transfer scheme.
As part of the package, the senior citizens were also promised free NHIF outpatient cover. Some have, however, been turned away from accredited medical facilities despite their names being in the beneficiaries list.
“The elderly have NHIF cards but they are not functional because they were not paid for. If this is a fraud, who committed it,” posed Eseli Simiyu, the Tongaren MP.
Looting after looting
The NHIF had a rough 2018 which culminated with the firing of the rogue CEO Geofrey Mwangi.
Instead of the board also following home, they were left to continue looting from the health insurer.
Hannah Muriithi who is the Chairperson to the NHIF Board and all her gangs should be sent home, arrested and charged with defrauding the NHIF.
They escaped so easily by sacrificing Geofrey Mwangi but the rot remained.
They loot billions of monies from NHIF and stash then in foreign bank accounts.
Hannah even bought a house in English Point Marina after only having spent less that 6 months as the chair to the board.
She is also whispered to have unofficial contracts with private hospitals whom she pays and demands for Kickbacks.
She is a real rogue one, a thieves without blinking.
As all this is happening, NHIF has failed to pay hospitals that are run by churches close to Ksh2 billion in reimbursements. Thereby crippling some of their operations.
It is true that the chair is very very corrupt, according to a NHIF Service provider. She irregularly hired a (her) legal firm called MMC Africa immediately after she became the chair of the board and pushed for the firm to be given a Mega deal worth Ksh. 500 million.
The NHIF Board as currently constituted should be disbanded and the officials arrested and charged.
