I joined Toyota from a multinational. Thinking I had moved to another multinational and that it was a step in my career. How wrong I was. It was the beginning of the horror that is my life currently.
I was to be confirmed after three months, this went to 6, then 9, then a year without confirmation despite performing very well. Instead, there was a restructuring and I was demoted to satisfy certain ‘favoured’ individuals.
When I protested it, what followed were harsh emails ( We will release the emails) and questions from the Risk department, the MD and COO and also unplanned, targeted audits. Still, I was not confirmed. Almost two years later into my employment at Toyota Kenya, I was unconfirmed, mentally deprived and depressed.
I had lost weight and occasionally suffered anxiety and panic attacks. I watched in horror as staff were fired for very small issues. Some that did not warrant even a disciplinary discussion.
Despite all this, my department’s performance was at its best. One afternoon I was summoned to HR and given a dismissal letter. My laptop was disconnected and security was waiting to escort me out. Like I would resist and sit in that toxic torture chamber. They couldn’t even allow me to pick up my packed lunch from the fridge.
My CV is dented, my future uncertain and my mental health damaged. With all that, I still count myself lucky as many people have faced worse treatment.
All the issues in Toyota are orchestrated by the MD, Risk Manager and COO.
