Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko

News reaching our desk this evening is that Nairobi governor Mike Sonko wants digital entrepreneurs in his county to start paying taxes.

From the 1st of July 2019, online traders who sell their goods on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram will be expected to contribute towards City Hall’s budget.

The move is expected to affect many young Kenyans who have heavily invested in virtual market stores due to the lack of jobs in the country.

Sonko also wants to increase parking fees barely six months after reducing it to Ksh. 200.

In January he had announced the reduction of the fee from Ksh. 300, noting that it was in line with his manifesto.

But in budget estimates announced on Tuesday at Nairobi County Assembly, Finance Executive Charles Kerich announced that the parking fees will be increased.

The county aims at achieving an internal revenue target of Ksh. 17.32 billion in the 2019/2020 financial year.
