Oh boychild

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha on Monday urged for more attention for the boy-child as girls outperformed boys for the second year in a row.

CS Magoha made the remark on Monday while releasing the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination results at the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) headquarters in Nairobi.

“It is evident that girls are competing favourably with the boys for the top academic honours. And, perhaps, I’m saying this without permission but perhaps it’s time we also started thinking of the boy child,” said the CS.

A total of 1,083,456 candidates sat for the 2019 KCPE examinations, out of which 543,000 were boys and 539,874  girls.

Two girls, Flavian Onyango (Chakol Girls) and June Cheptoo Koech (Sangalo Central), were among the top performers, scoring 439 marks to come in second place; a position they shared with Sean Michael Ndung’u (Kitengela International School).

Andy Michael Munyiri emerged the top performer with 440 marks, thereby ensuring the top four spoils were evenly shared out between both genders.

18 counties registered more female candidates compared to male candidates, namely; Kakamega, Nairobi, Meru, Bungoma, Vihiga, Busia, Kiambu, Siaya, Kitui, Embu, Kisumu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Trans Nzoia, Mombasa and Bomet.

Female candidates performed better than their male counterparts in English, Kiswahili, and Kenya Sign Language but lost out to them in Maths, Science and Social Studies.

CS Magoha also announced that teenage pregnancies in the country had dropped, a feat he attributed to parents spending more time with their children.
