High Court has temporarily halted an order to increase parking fees in Nairobi. The suspension follows a case filed by the Consumer Federation of Kenya (Cofek), accusing city hall of issuing a short notice.

Following the suspension of the order, Nairobi motorists will pay the KSh 200 fee as they wait for a hearing on the case.

High Court Justice James Makau notes that Cofek made a reasonable case since citizens will suffer from the increased fees. Therefore, the judge suspended the order, setting January 21 2020 as the date for its new hearing.

On Monday, City Hall announced that it will double its parking fees in the CBD, effective December 4th. As a result, Cofek filed a case against Nairobi Country for failing to involve the public in the making of the bill.

The federation lawyer Henry Kurauka also cited that higher parking on buses would have a ripple effect on fares.

There is no reasonable cause to increase parking fees at a time when most consumers are struggling to provide basic amenities for their families such as food, housing, healthcare, school fees, clothing, fuel, airtime, transport and expenses for other important social activities.
