The government has announced Total Kenya’s Director of Strategy Dr Macharia Irungu as the managing director of the Kenya Pipeline Corporation (KPC).
Irungu, 53, is also a Commissioner at the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), where he has been fighting litigation for being and industry player, and at the same time a regulator.

Irungu beat 88 applicants who were eyeing the position, of which nine were shortlisted. The names of the three candidates who scored highest were thereafter forwarded to to the Cabinet Secretary for Petroleum Cabinet Secretary John Munyes.
“Dr. Irungu, who scored highest during the final Board interviews, brings over twenty eight (28) years’ experience in the oil & gas industry, with eleven of the years spent at the highest levels of management,” said Munyes in a statement.
He currently serves as Managing Director of Gulf Africa Petroleum Corporation (GAPCO), a member of the Total Group.
He will resign from both positions to take up his new role as KPC Managing Director.
Dr Irungu holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from the University of Nairobi, a Master of Business Management Degree from the National University – USA and a Doctor of Philosophy in Strategic Management from the University of Nairobi.
