Military Ties: Union distances itself from KPLC’s data clean up exercise

The Kenya Electrical Trade & Allied Union (KETAWU) has declined invitation by KPLC to launch a data clean up exercise.

KPLC has contracted the National Youth Service (NYS)  to do what it calls Facilities Database (FDB) clean up ‘to improve efficiency’.

KETAWU stated that it’s decision is based on the perception that KPLC had clearly avoided using available resource, that is internal staff, for the project.

“You will recall we prevailed upon you to consider using internal capacity available within the company in order to ensure credibility of data through the current structured business system. In view of the above, and on behalf of the union. I humbly decline to participate in the launch or be associated with the partnership which casts doubt on employees’ trust and commitment”, KETAWU’s statement stated in part.

The exercise

KPLC’s Financial Year 2021/2022 turnaround strategy involves reconciliation of data and mapping of all meters to increase efficiency.

“We have already commenced the network digitisation process, and a substantive part of our network has already been updated in FDB with this partnership completing the remainder,” KPLC said.

KPLC which has been bogged down by accusations of metre tampering and guesswork in electricity billing says the exercise will improve integrity of data.

” To sustain the integrity of the data, it will be mandatory that our connectivity process, and system maintenance be updated in the FDB as soon as it happens. By the same token, whenever employees replace a meter, construct a new line or install a transformer, that information must be captured on FDB “, KPLC added.

Critics however say, the use of NYS is suspect.

“Please highlight how Uhuru is fond of using the military in everything. This should stop”, a person familiar with the matter told cnyakundi.com
