Maseno University has had a good reputation since its inception until Julius Nyabundi came back as the vice chancellor.
The institution whose main campus is situated along Busia road near the Equator crossing line is a well known university that has been headed by various competent vice chancellors of high reputation.
Staff and students accused the VC of highhandedness and mysterious operations at the institution which shrouded in utter secrecy.
But the way events have been unfolding at the campus of late leaves many questions begging as lecturers and students are deeply entrenched in one aspect of corruption, social misconduct immorality and sex in exchange of positive exam results.
It came to the fore when the university was shut down indefinitely following students’ unrest over increased insecurity in and around the institution. Students took to the streets claiming that their pleas had fallen on deaf ears of the area police force after several thefts in their halls of residence and violence by unknown machete wielding gangs putting their lives at risk. They claim that the gangs mercilessly beat and rape female students.
According to the students, one such ugly incident happened after the dreaded sex reptiles broke into their houses ordering everybody flat on the ground and raped them and beat up those who dared to resist and eventually stole their valuable goods.
The panicking lecturers were quick to rubbish the purported insecurity claims by the unruly students saying it was a stage managed move after word went round that the institution would soon be under full CCTV cameras surveillance to avert further criminal activities within the campus and cheating at the exam room, adding that the students are currently behaving like rabid dogs that are out to bite even the owners.
One of the students who did not want to be named for fear of victimisation said some of them who have been trading sex in exchange of exam results are a bitter lot with the institutions plans to install CCTV cameras inside the exam rooms since the institution has been experiencing exam cheats.
Weekly Citizen has also established that a number of students have been shortchanged on graduation day with some of them taken by shock after their names go missing in the list of those to graduate.
A senior staff at the office of academic registrar is a case involving Cynthia Achieng Olonde. Olonde is said to have wept to find out that her name was missing from the list of those waiting to graduate on December 13 and her admission number given to Mike Dida, a ghost student.
Our sources involved in the graduation ceremony revealed that Olonde admission is listed as No BA/04049/016, School Arts and Social Sciences, Course Sociology with IT. She with other students have threatened to seek a court order to stop the ceremony.
Prof Nyabundi was unceremoniously removed from the now limping Chemelil Sugar Company some years back following claims of corruption and his return, it was not welcome as many did not expect great changes as majority are said to have been supporting the former VC whom Nyabundi fronted for his removal.
Nyabundi is said to be a man who is most dreaded, most misunderstood as well as having dangerous cards under the table as his footsteps can not be heard or detected whenever he is executing lethal plans.
Nyabundi and lecturers are accused of not helping in transforming and reforming the institution. It is against this background that a section of students want him among other lecturers to be immediately pushed out of the institution.
