Kenyan marathoner Eliud Kipchoge is set to be awarded an honorary Doctorate of Science degree next week.
Kipchoge, who is the world marathon record holder, will be conferred with the degree by Laikipia University during the 7th graduation ceremony on December 6th, according to an advert appearing in local newspapers on Wednesday.
“Pursuant to Laikipia University Charter, 2013 Section III(21) (4) (k) on the conferment of Honorary Degrees upon recommendation of the University Senate and approval thereof by the Laikipia University Council, the University has the pleasure to present Mr. Eliud Kipchoge to Kenyans and the international community for the award of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa),” the advert reads.
Laikipia University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kibett Rotich said the achievements made by Kipchoge were a tremendous contribution to the world of sports. Kipchoge made history as the first man to run a marathon in less than two hours when he achieved the INEOS Challenge in Austria, Vienna on October 12th.
“In a remarkable feat of endurance, Eliud delivered his ‘moon landing’ moment by crossing the finishing line in a mind-blowing time of 1;59;40 in Vienna, as he delivered on his pledge to prove that ‘No Human is Limited,” stated Prof. Kibett.
During Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20th, President Kenyatta awarded Kipchoge with the ‘Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart’ (EGH), the highest civilian award in Kenya.
On November 23rd, Kichoge beat four other contestants to win the Male Athlete of the Year award for the second year in a row during a ceremony held in Monaco, France.
