Former vice chair of Jubilee Party David Murathe has opened controversial debate on whether Uhuru will be next Prime Minister. This is after he declared that after the implementation of the Building Bridges Initiative; Mr. Kentatta will have the right to go for any post including the post for Prime Minister.
Mr. Murathe said that the only thing that the president can’t do is to run for presidency. He added that we anticipated new political formations under the new political dispensation envisaged by the BBI.
He further stated that nothing stops the president to head the government as the chief Prime Minister. As long as he remained the Jubilee leader with the party being the largest in Kenya he was qualified.
Leaders Facing Corruption Charges
The Jubilee Party Secretary General a day before released a statement that that left some leaders with electrical waves. The Secretary noted that leaders facing corruption cases will be locked out from the March election.
Some may interpret this to mean that kenyattas intention is to remain as the party leader even after his term has come to the end. On the other hand, Ruto’s allies may view it as a blow to his ambitions for presidency.
Mr. Murathe cautioned the Tangatanga brigade against airing their voices concerning the Jubilee party elections. He clarified to them that Mr. Kenyatta will maintain his position as the leader.
There is doubt as whether Ruto is perspiring for the party leadership next year. However, his lieutenants have released gestures suggesting the same while addressing the various gatherings.
He called to the attention of Ruto’s allies to understand that Mr. kenyatta’s would maintain his position Come rain come sunshine. He urged them if they wanted contest to bring it on early enough.
Mr. Murathe had vowed to fight to his best including going to Supreme Court to block Ruto’s from ascending to power. This was after his resignation as Jubilee’s vice chairperson due to intense fights.
High Stakes for Uhuru to Remain in Power
Other allies of Kenyatta have also spoken of his probabilities to remain in power after the completion of his term. They include Central Organization of Trade Union Secretary Francis Atwoli and Nominated MP Maina Kamanda.
On the other hand, former Presidential Candidate, MS Martha Karua cautioned Kenyatta against the ambition. She brought to his attention that it would be against the 2010 constitution which stipulated two terms limit. The two term limits were intended to stop leaders ruling for more than 10 years.
The law gives clear presidential terms but it is silence on governance structure as Mr. Waiganjo noted. Directive of whether one can assume the position of a deputy or Prime Minister after the presidential term are not included.
