35% of Kenyans prefer bribe to get quick services


Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commissions findings show that 35 percent of would pay bribes to get quick services.

The latest corruption survey released tuesday also indicate that 18.7% wou;ld bribe to get a job and another 14% would prefer bribing to get general services.

The report goes further to show that over 9% cent will bribe to speed up services, 9.3 per cent to avoid problems with the authorities and 5.9 per cent to avoid confrontation or being arrested by police or other law enforcement authorities. 1.6 percent of Kenyans bribe to obtain National Identity cards and 2.9 percent bribe to gain access to proper medical services.

Poverty and drought also featured in the findings with 2.3 per cent of Kenyans reported have gone against the ethics in order to deal with the situation. The number of Kenyans reporting corruption to relevant bodies has however dropped to 5.8% in 2018 from 6.7% in 2018.

Statistics digs further to corruption in the courts where findings indicate that 1 percent of kenyans bribe to get fair ruling or to be favored.

The survey that EACC has lauded as comprehensive and covering all the 47 counties  and over 5940 household respondents and 10 key informants was conducted between November 16th and December 19th, 2018.

It also indicates that bribe has dropped from sh5,058 in 2017 to sh3,833 in 2018, the lowest since the year 2012.
